Kinematic design of automotive gear differentials

An automotive gear differential is a joint-fractionated planetary gear train with two degrees of freedom. In this paper, the kinematic graphs of automotive gear differentials with five, six, seven, and eight members are presented. Based on the concept of train value equations of planetary gear trains and the equations of motion of automotive gear differentials, we derive mathematical expressions of train values for the kinematic design of automotive gear differentials. For each kinematic graph, according to these equations, we synthesize their corresponding automotive differentials. Some detailed examples are given as illustration.
