KMDS--An expert system for integrated hardware/software design of microprocessor-based digital systems

Abstract

An integrated design automation system, KMDS, is presented for the design of microprocessor-based digital systems. It is implemented using a knowledge-based expert system to support the following functions: (1) automatic synthesis of the circuit of microprocessor-based digital systems at the processor-memory-switch (PMS) level, (2) automatic generation of control programs for the implemented microprocessor-based digital systems, (3) automatic ASIC design to realize special-purpose circuit functions at the algorithmic level, (4) automatic printed circuit board (PCB) layout, and (5) high-level knowledge base editing and debugging. In addition, several features are included to help realize a modularized and flexible design automation tool.
