Abstract

The laminar natural convection flows adjacent to a vertical surface in viscous oils are analyzed. For an isothermal surface, similarity solutions are found to exist for viscosity variation expressed as a general function of temperature. For the situation of an exponential variation of viscosity with temperature, numerical results are presented over a wide range of film temperature Prandtl number. It is shown that for the heated wall the constant viscosity results underestimate the Nusselt number and overestimate the drag coefficient. For the cooled wall, the opposite is true. The heat transfer results for the heated wall are in very close agreement with the corresponding correlation of previous experimental investigations. Furthermore, a new correlation for the cooled wall is suggested.
