Abstract

The laminar natural convection induced in a vertical tube by uniform internal heat generation is considered for the purpose of modifying particle trajectories in MCVD. The principal interest focussed on the interaction of the buoyant motion with the forced convection in the tube. For the magnitudes of heat generation of interest in the actual application in MCVD, the Boussinesq approximation was found to be seriously in error and that the correct equation of state must be used in expressing the buoyant term in the axial momentum equation.
