Abstract
The effect of laser irradiation on the electron field emission properties of CNTs was studied. With laser irradiation duration, the emission current density at electric field 2 V/μm is enhanced from 0.75 to 14.0 mA/cm2, whereas the field enhancement factor is hardly altered. Comparing these phenomena with the electron field emission properties of CNTs measured at elevated temperature implies that the mechanism modifying the electron field emission properties of CNTs is not the thermal effect. The main process is probably the induction of the surface plasmons.
