Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility x of La₂CuO₄ crystals have been measured with external magnetic field perpendicular to and within the c plane. A kind of ordering or condensation of the spin system with the spin direction parallel to the c axis has been found although it is difficult to consistently explain all of the observed behaviors. Even above the ordering temperature ({reversed tilde equals} 250K), uniaxial anisotropy of x has also been observed.
