A novel multi-random pulse width modulation (MRPWM) technique for improving the spectrum performance of an inverter is analyzed. MRPWM combines a new random time-shift PWM scheme and a random pulse position PWM scheme, both driven at the same fixed switching frequency. Theoretical analysis of MRPWM is presented. Also, the output characteristics of various random pulse width PWM schemes are evaluated and compared. Finally, computer simulation results and experimental results are presented, confirming the theoretical predictions that the proposed MRPWM method offers better performance than single random PWM (SRPWM) schemes.
