Abstract

On-line estimation of cell mass based on balances of material and the degree of reductance was developed. Oxygen and carbon dioxide contents at the inlet and outlet of the fermentor were measured to complete the balance equations. A simple equation is obtained for calculating the cell mass, which is a function of the oxygen uptake rate and the carbon dioxide evolution rate.
