Abstract
This work presents a systematic approach for the design of differential transmissions for motorcycles. The differential transmission consists of a speed and torque controlled variable ratio v-belt drive system and a simple differential gear. Based on the kinematic analysis, power flow analysis, and design constraints, the valid range of the relative speed ratio of the differential transmission and four acceptable design concept are obtained. And, the differential transmission with a maximum mechanical efficiency is identified. Finally, according to the mathematical expressions of the relative speed ratio of the differential gear and the speed range of the v-belt drive system, the corresponding differential transmissions are synthesized. An example is provided to illustrate the proposed design procedure.
