N2 - Performance of hydraulic flushing of a reservoir encounters complex issues of meteorological and hydrologic conditions of a watershed, sediment sources and transport process in reservoir, reservoir flood control operation, sluicing facilities, water management and alternative water supplies. To prevent from reducing water supply, hydraulic flushing should be carried out through flood control operation. It might be possible to increase the performance of hydraulic flushing by releasing more water than ordinary flood control operation. Different policies of hydraulic sluicing of Shihmen Reservoir were evaluated in this paper to achieve the maximum efficiency of flushing sediment out from the reservoir. Empirical regression models were developed to estimate the sediment concentrations of releases of different outlet works. A comprehensive simulation of both reservoir flood control operation and water supply were carried out for 50 years of historical records to estimate the quantity of sediment to be flushed.
