N2 - The effects of variable-thickness cell edges on the out-of-plane compressive buckling strengths of regular hexagonal honeycombs is investigated and presented here. A three-dimensional (3D) representative volume element (RVE) honeycomb model with appropriate periodic boundary conditions was proposed and employed to numerically calculate the out-of-plane compressive buckling strengths of regular hexagonal honeycombs with variable-thickness cell edges. In the RVE honeycomb model, the non-uniform cross-section of cell edges is taken to be a plateau border. Finite element numerical results indicate that the out-of-plane compressive buckling strengths of regular hexagonal honeycombs with plateau borders, normalized by those of same relative-density honeycombs with uniform-thickness cell edges, increase slightly at the beginning and then fall dramatically after reaching a maximum value as the solid is shifted into the plateau border region in cell edges. The maximum out-of-plane compressive buckling strengths of regular hexagonal honeycombs with plateau borders can be 40% higher than those with uniform-thickness cell edges. Also, the effects of solid distribution in cell edges on the out-of-plane compressive buckling strengths of regular hexagonal honeycombs with plateau borders are dependent on their relative density.
