Abstract

A two step process is suggested for the semibatch feed policy for constant composition copolymerization. The aims of the policy suggested are to control composition, rate, and qualities of copolymerization. In the reactor analysis, the apparent rate constant model is adopted for the rate expressions of copolymerization. The feed rates of the more active monomer and the initiator for compensating composition, and for adjusting rate and molecular weights as well as the course of polymerization and qualities of copolymerization are worked out analytically. Solution copolymerizations of styrene and acrylonitrile are chosen as the system for illustration. The numerical results for conducting the constant composition copolymerizations of 0.1 to 0.5 mole fraction styrene are given.
