Polymer-clay nanocomposites from directly micellized polymer/toluene in water and their characterization by WAXD and solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Abstract

Polymer-clay nanocomposites with hydrophobicpolymer matrixes, such as polystyrene or poly(methyl methacrylate), were prepared from dispersed unmodified clay and directly surfactantmicellized polymer/toluene in one pot. The mixing of clay and hydrophobic polymer is evidenced by a large long period of ca. 4 nm as observed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Two-dimensional 1H-29Si NMR experiments with 1H spin diffusion confirm the proximity of clay, surfactant, and a significant polymer fraction on the 5-nm scale.
