Probabilistic equation of critical slope for debris-flow occurrence

Abstract

A probabilistic equation of critical slope for debris-flow occurrence has been developed with the consideration of the uncertainty of parameters, such as the thickness and slope of soil layer, soil porosity, the friction angle and cohesion of soil, and the water level in the soil layer. Debris-flow events in hillslopes were analyzed to find the relation of the slope and the probability of debris-flow occurrence. The relation is then compared with that obtained by the developed probabilistic equation. The comparison shows that the probabilistic equation can reasonably describe the occurrence probability of debris flow in hillslopes.
