Separation of As(III) by an o-xylene supported liquid membrane

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

An o-xylene-ME-24 supported liquid membrane was prepared for the separation of As(III) from HCl aqueous solution. The partition coefficients of As(III) in various HCl concentrations of aqueous solution were measured. The overall permeation coefficients obtained were 0.54-1.9 × 10-3 cm/sec, depending on HCl concentration of the feed phase and stirring speed. The overall permeation coefficient for the feed phase of 9.6 N HCl leveled off as the stirring speed was greater than 800 rpm. The minimum feed aqueous film resistance obtained was 480 sec/cm, and the membrane resistance was 340 sec/cm. The governing resistance of As(III) permeation in this system is the feed aqueous film resistance when the feed phase HCl concentration is greater than 7.6 N.
