Serious Game Design for High-Risk Training – The Case of Offshore Wind Turbine Maintenance Personnel Training

Abstract

Offshore wind turbine maintenance personnel work in high-risk environments and must undergo repeated training prior to work to ensure work safety and improve serviceability. However, the cost of training operation and maintenance personnel is considerable. To increase the efficiency of training and reduce training costs, offshore wind power company have been actively seeking efficient training aids, especially in relation to online training method. Therefore, this research develops a serious game of offshore wind turbine power system maintenance, which is develop for maintenance simulation training used by maintenance personnel. It was difficult for them to be trained in the real place due to safety, money, and time cost factors, but serious games can be used for simulated training. This way is suitable as a training path for high-cost and high-risk fields of wind turbine operation and maintenance training. Since serious game development focuses on specialized fields and special target users, it is important to emphasize the opinions of all the stakeholders. Therefore, we use the concept of participatory design to include all the stakeholders in our design process and incorporate the theory of gamification and educational design into our design. The process of developing this power maintenance game will target user testing as a basis for the advancement of the next generation of prototypes, and we will evaluate it with usability and learning performance. This research will document the process of organizing iterations as design recommendations for subsequent serious game development.
