Abstract
Based on the Michell linear theory and the Weinblum nondimensional technique, a simplified approach is developed in this paper to predict the wave resistance of a real ship. The shape of the ship hull does not need to be a simplified one which is symmetrical fore and aft. The program has been well developed using the suitable numerical technique and can be easily performed on the personal computer. This approach will be helpful for predicting the wave resistance of ships with arbitrary hull shape. According to the present analysis, the original Michell theory is largely improved by the present technique. It is also found that the more waterline segments and draft parts are divided, the better the results are and even come close to the results of the three-dimensional theory.
