Simulation of Waveguide Birefringence by Using the Beam Propagation Method

Abstract

The beam-propagation method which has been widely used to simulate waveguide devices is based on the scalar field approximation. It cannot be used to simulate the waveguide birefringence caused by any abrupt index change. In this letter, we demonstrate that by modifying the waveguide geometry, the beam-propagation method can be extended to determine the mode indexes of both polarizations.
