Smart sensing and control of a high-speed rotating piezo-embedded graphite-epoxy beam-mass system

Abstract

The paper presents a finite element formulation and the associated method for controller design of a smart flexible mechanism featuring piezoelectric materials. By incorporating the functional of a high speed rotating flexible piezo-Gr/Ep beam-mass system into a variational formula, a analytical model describing the dynamic behavior of a smart structure is derived. The formulation permits the development of the governing finite element equations which accommodate equivalent material properties of the original structural element and the piezoelectric element to provide the system model parameters needed for a controller design. The contribution of gyroscopic terms and the effect of controller using smart devices are characterized and presented. Several simulation examples are presented to validate the analytical formulation.
