Abstract

A description is given of the general architecture of a data-control (D-C) flow system and of a key special function processor within this system, the special function unit for database operations (SFU-DB). The D-C flow system is highly parallel database machine for supporting very large database applications. The main features of this system are: 1) the use of a parallel query-processing strategy that combines several existing query-processing techniques; 2) the use of a vertical data-fragmentation strategy that increases the degree of concurrency in I/O and data processing in addition to reducing the amount of data to be transferred among processing nodes, and 3) the use of special function processors, which are implementable as VLSI chips, for efficient execution of primitive operations.
