This paper presents statistical modeling methods frequently used in design and manufacturing. Five commonly used models are covered, namely: autoregressive moving average model, multivariate transfer function model, threshold models, nonlinear time series model and threshold adaptive model. Examples of applications of these models are given including machine-tool structure design and refinement, system optimization, adaptive control, process monitoring and forecasting control. Emphasis is placed on the design and implementation of statistical methods for various applications in CAD/CAM environment.
