Steady-state stability analysis of a power system containing power system stabilizers and SMEC controller: a comparative study

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a comparative study of two damping controllers, i.e., the power system stabiliser (PSS) and the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) controller, on damping generator oscillations. The developed scheme employs a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) damping controller to enhance the dampings of both mechanical mode and exciter mode of the studied system. The parameters of the proposed controllers are determined by using a unified approach based on modal control theory. Frequency-domain approach based on root loci analysis and time-domain approach based on a linear model simulations are accomplished in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes and to compare the different damping effects provided by two damping controllers.
