Step surface induced unidirectional exchange anisotropy in PtMn/Ni 80Fe 20 on Mo(001)

Abstract

Exchange anisotropy for a PtMn/Ni 80Fe 20 bilayer grown on a Mo(001) step surface is studied. The PtMn/Ni 80Fe 20 bilayers were mainly grown as a (110) quad-crystal structure mixed with a minor (001) component. The PtMn/Ni 80Fe 20 bilayers show a unidirectional exchange anisotropy with exchange field up to about 190 Oe with easy axis parallel to the underlying Mo step-edge direction. The azimuthal distribution of the exchange field is explained by interplay of a step-induced unidirectional anisotropy and crystalline-induced anisotropy.
