A multi-stage damage detection method is proposed, which combines the characteristics of the model updating method and the advantage of global optimization methods. An improved simulated annealing algorithm is employed to identify sequentially the location and extent of possible damage in a structure. Numerical studies show that the proposed approach is effective in solving problems with sparsely localized structural damage under moderately noisy conditions.
