Abstract

The magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films grown on surfaces with reduced symmetry are of technological and scientific interest. Several research results have shown that magnetic films epitaxially grown on vicinal non-magnetic surfaces produce drastically altered magnetic anisotropy, i.e. on Co/Cu[110] and Fe/Ag[001]. We have recently observed the step induced magnetic anisotropy on Permalloy film grown on a Mo[001] surface, prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on hcp sapphire substrate. We present the systematical study on the temperature variation of the step induced magnetic anisotropy in the Permalloy film.
