The effect of yield stress on the initiation of fatigue crack occurred from a round hole

Abstract

When a specimen with a round hole is subjected to cyclic loads, the maximum local stress right beside the round hole, where has a higher stress concentration factor, would exceed yield stress easily and induce plastic deformation. In this way, the actual stress range act on this region is different from the nominal stress range, and is more appropriate for the prediction of initiation of fatigue crack. Nevertheless if a specimen has lower yield stress, the actual stress range becomes smaller, which might lead to a longer life of fatigue cracks initiation. To verify the effect of lower yield stress on the fatigue cracks initiation, finite element analysis and fatigue tests were carried out by using aluminum alloy A5083-O plate specimens. To show the effectiveness of yield stress, three kinds of specimen with the same shape but with different yield stress and Young's modulus were designed. In finite element calculations the two sets of mechanical properties were used separately to obtain the actual stress range. Although the S-N curves do not show significant differences but the lower yield stress specimen has longer initial life than that of the higher yield stress. Finally, by adopting the actual stress range obtained from finite element calculations and S-N curve, estimation on the fatigue initial life occurred in a round hole is achieved.
