The performance of impact sound insulation of floors is one of the essential factors regarding indoor environment quality. Floor coverings construction for improving floor impact sound insulation is the most common method in Taiwan. However, designs and constructors usually use only one layer of material over the construction floor; and recently, adding materials with better damping effect for better improvement of insulation was gradually applied. In order to select an appropriate floor covering material, the experimental investigation based on the standard ISO 140-7 or 140-8 should be carried out. However, according to the ISO standards, the experimental process is complicated and the equipment is expensive for architectural designers.Moreover, during the construction, it takes plenty of time and costs for selecting an appropriate floor covering material; ; and also, the site of construction is complex, thus the gauging accurate is difficult to control. In this study, the authors executed experimental investigation on floor impact sound insulation with various floor coverings construction. The experiment has been carried out using a full-scale building, and the combination of common covering materials and damping materials were tested. The researchers attempt to simplify the testing process with high accurate and to establish a convenient evaluation method of sound impact insulation performance of covering materials, as well as fundamental data of the sound impact insulation of various covering materials. The researchers expect that the database could provide designers and constructors the reference of the floor covering materials related to the floor impact sound insulation and reduce the time and the costs issue.
