Abstract

Theoretical solutions are obtained for the diffraction of oblique waves by an infinite vertical barrier with a small slit in deep water. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to solve two problems: (1) thin barrier where the thickness of the barrier is small in comparison with wavelength, and (2) wide barrier where the wavelength and the thickness of the barrier are in the same order of magnitude. Approximate formula for the transmission coefficient and the reflection coefficient are presented for both cases.
