Abstract

A triaxial goniometer for the evaluation of humeral bone joint angular motion has been developed. The design of this instrument is based on the gyroscopic principle which allows the simultaneous measurement of three-dimensional elbow joint rotation in terms of flexion-extension (yaw), abduction-adduction (pitch) and supination-pronation (roll) angles. The special gimbal mechanism adopted in the goniometer design makes the joint angular displacement sequentially independent, therefore, continuous monitoring of the elbow joint motion pattern is possible.
