N2 - This paper presents an application of the observational method, in which soil parameters are updated using the ground settlement measured in the staged excavation. The updated soil parameters are in turn used for updating the "prediction" of building damage potential caused by the excavation. In this approach, the soil parameters are first back calculated by minimizing the difference between the settlement predicted with an empirical model (e.g., Kung et al 2007) and the observed settlement at a given stage. These back calculated soil parameters and their values immediately before updating are used to determine the updated values based on a technique of relaxation. With the updated soil parameters, the ground settlement andthe building damage potential can be reassessed for future stages of excavation. Copyright ASCE 2009.
