VGI Cooperative Platform for Geo-information Crowdsourcing in Indigenous knowledge of community disaster resilience

Abstract

Indigenous knowledge is important to community disaster resilience because it is the knowledge takes several decades, generations, or even centuries to realize how to avoid natural disaster risks by the lesson learned from interaction with natural environment. Taiwan is high in disaster risks and has been long devoting mass amount of resources in disaster geo-information infrastructures by establishing databases and protocols within government institutions. However, indigenous knowledge for community resilience remains the gap of the disaster information infrastructure. The paper argues disaster resilience communities need geo-information could support the resolution and dynamics of disaster prone communities. Volunteer Geographic Information system (VGI) for crowdsourcing of community disaster information is proposed as an integrated cooperation platform to bridge the gap of official disaster databases.
