Free vibration characteristics of a cylindrical shell with a circumferential stiffener are studied. Two types of the circumferential stiffener are considered: inner ring and outer ring. The effect of rotatory inertia and transverse shearing strain of both the shell and stiffener is considered. Further, the warping effect of stiffener is also included. An analytic method is presented to obtain the modal frequencies and their corresponding mode shape functions of the ring-stiffened shell. The orthogonality of two distinct mode shape functions of the structure is shown. The effects of the two different types of ring on modal frequencies of the ring-stiffened shell are compared. It is found that an outer ring gives a better on stiffening shell for high axial modes than an inner ring does.
