Abstract
Tainan City is rich in traditional streets and historical elements. Since the principal methods for renewalmainly emphasize on conservation and renovation, the government lack overall district plan and lead to
the limitation of large-scale improvement on physical environment. In recent years, on account of Urban
Heat Island (UHI) effect growing with global climate change, Tainan traditional districts are facing the
challenge of balancing historical preservation and improvement on the quality of residential living
environment. To address this issue, the governments both at home and abroad are using urban design to
regulate the urban heat island effect by creating the appropriate wind environment.
In the research, Zone-Ye traditional district is selected as the investigation area, and 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
in summer was chosen as the research period. Research methods are field measurement and
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. By the programs of rebuilding unoccupied spaces,
and removing unoccupied and illegal buildings for CFD modelings, the research could explore the
influence on varying the average velocity, and propose the urban design for traditional district wind
environment from the incorporated consequences.
