Abstract
This is a study of the traffic routes between the Zhongyuan states of Song, Cao, Xǔ, Zheng, and Zhou as detailed in the Zuo-Zhuan.As a historical classic, the Zuo-Zhuan is a prose retelling of the historical events as established in the classic book of Chunqiu via textual criticism. This work aims to establish the changes in territories and evolution of traffic routes between contemporary states, based on descriptions of migration and relative geography as detailed in the Zuo-Zhuan.
Here, we attempt to recreate the traffic conditions during the Chunqiu Period based on in-depth analysis of the Zuo-Zhuan, and attempt to re-establish historically significant traffic routes expanding from cities based on the text, using methods including historical criticism, textual analysis, and cartographic research, ultimately plotting these routes on a map.
