Abstract

Zhang Yi-Xuan has elected as one of the “20 under 40 most anticipated Chinese novelist”, but there are few comments about her. However, most of the commentators who mentioned her works of literature all put her under the context of homosexual literature. In my opinion, she didn’t put her on the topic of lesbian completely even though not many publishing. According to this premise, my thesis will start with Zhang’s background of radical feminism, feminist study clubs and movements for women’s rights. To analyze her texts, I will compare the text with her personal experience comprehensively to point out the importance of her.
There are five parts of this thesis. I will define the motivation of this research, research field and the current research in the first chapter to establish the foundation of this thesis. Zhang is close to the feminism, we can find the radical feminism thinking from her selections of prose, so that the second chapter will draw a conclusion of her concept creation by analyzing the texts, discussions and records of interview. On the other side, her personal experience in the feminist study clubs related to the story about the feminist study clubs that shows the friendships between lesbian, political issues and movements for women’s rights, it will be a good reference. Start with the trauma of family that shows in her text, Zhang questioned the family in the text. The love of father and mother all come with a question mark. There is a recreation of “Family” that we can see from the appearance of the imagination of identity and desire. We can say, from the destruction of an image of traditional family and a construction of a image of homosexual family, there’s a different way to recognize ourselves we never known. The “Lesbian” is the most important topic in Zhang’s text. In general, the two earlier novels “The Broken Hours” and “The Best Hours” are all about the lesbian mostly, when it came to the “The temporality of love”, the lesbian that Zhang created presenting a whole new picture ”to fall in love with a heterosexual”. We will talk about the characters of Zhang’s lesbian novel in the forth chapter, and see how special it is in the context of the lesbian novels in Taiwan. The fifth chapter will include the research conclusion, limits and prospects. I contend that the themes of Zhang’s text are base on “Love”, such as Feminism, Social movement, Trauma of family and Lesbian. The main subject that Zhang discussed is the thinking about “LOVE”.
