Abstract

This thesis explores the situations of people applying the Classic of Poetry in oral communication during the Spring and Autumn period and thereby expounds on the formation process of the final version of the Classic of Poetry. In the second chapter Analysis of the Practical Types of the Classic of Poetry, while organizing the cases of applying poetry in Zuo Zhuan and Guoyu, the practical types of the Classic of Poetry are classified into four categories, including Yin-shi, Fu-shi, Ge-shi, and Song-shi. In addition, the controversy of the forms of Fu-shi, Ge-shi, and Song-shi is further clarified through distinguishing the usage of the verbs Fu, Ge, and Song.

In the third chapter Analysis of the Practicality of the Classic of Poetry in the Spring and Autumn Period, the analysis tables are made separately for the richly documented cases of Yin-shi and Fu-shi, so that the tendency of applying poetry in each ducal state during the Spring and Autumn period can be easily understood and the similarities and differences can be further analyzed. On the whole, each state has its own characteristics in the selection of poems from Guofeng as well as applying more poems from Guofeng on the occasions of Fu-shi. Moreover, although it is focused on the two Ya in the cases of Yin-shi and Fu-shi, both Da Ya and Xiao Ya were paid equal attention to on the occasions of Yin-shi; Xiao Ya was obviously emphasized more on the occasions of Fu-shi. It is considered that this is due to the different creation times and the music of Da Ya and Xiao Ya.

The second half of this thesis discusses the factors influencing poems of the Classic of Poetry from creation to application. It is divided into two parts: the fourth chapter Marriage and the Dissemination of the Classic of Poetry, and the fifth chapter Education and the Dissemination of the Classic of Poetry. Through observing the two aspects, marriage, and education, the thesis then explores how the poems were spread internationally and circulated from generation to generation in the Spring and Autumn period when the Classic of Poetry was not yet finalized.
