Abstract

Liuqin is one of the important plucked stringed instruments. It has been about two hundred years since it came out. After the appearance of three-string Liuqin, its fret increased and its range was widened, which contributed to a more abundant musical performance. In the meantime, Liuquin also rose to be a solo musical instrument, triggering numerous composers to engage in the creation of Liuqin music. Until now, theses regarding Liuqin have mainly dealt with the analysis of musical works. None of them focuses on the analysis of Liuqin transboundary works. In view of this, the thesis is going to explore the world of Liuqin transboundary works.
The research of this thesis is conducted through six methods; they are information collection method, interview method, taxonomy (Classification Method), analysis Method, and comparative method. The first chapter of the thesis is introduction, covering my own opinion on “crossover.” The second chapter copes with the development of the musical instrument, Liuqin. The third and fourth chapters refer to the transboundary issue, using “The Playful Willow Mandolin” and “First Exploration—Illusionary Play.I” as examples to analyze their transboundary methods and exhibit my own playing strategies toward these two pieces of music. The last part is conclusion. This thesis aims to expose the successful DNA of transboundary works and even attempts to find a new transboundary direction by means of the analysis of these two outstanding Liuqin transboundary works. I sincerely hope the fruit of the thesis could be the reference for researchers, musicians, and Liuqin performers.
