Abstract
Since 1989 Geling Yan left China for the United States, she has begun creating the Chinese-American-themed novels. The experiences at foreign country’s development provide her the opportunity to observe the American culture and ethnic issues from real daily life.In the past had some commentator categorized Geling Yan’s series writing as “the immigration novel”, while I would suppose that the use of “transnational” is more suitable than “immigration”, because the “immigration” implies “active leaving for”, while the “transnational” covers a wide range of meaning, such as “abducted trafficking”, “involuntarily”, “suffering instigating” etc. which are belonged to the unwilling moving, could be included in the scope of transnational moving. After surmounting the Pacific Ocean, the Chinese people, who regardless went to the United States actively or passively, has become the “Across-sea” American visitors or long journey travelers.
This paper treats the subject of "transnational writing", selecting Geling Yan’s series of the Chinese American novels as a topic, discussing deeply the life image of the Chinese in the American society by the following 3 main aspects, i.e. the geographical space view, the visual concept of the Eastern and Western, and the gender loving view, experiencing what kind of mental turns in the process of from “out-of-place” to “in-place”. When the Eastern and Western meet together, how the power of gazing of the Western pursuits the Eastern, and then further observe the plight of cultural identification of the Chinese, and whether the emotional relationship which built on the basis of Utilitarianism and teleology exists the pure "love".
By the exploration of the above-mentioned subject, hoping to open up another possibility of reading “Transnational Writing" of Geling Yan’s.
