Abstract

Until today, Wen Yi-Duo’s study about “Shijung” cause many arguments. Many scholars understand Wen Yi-Duo’s angle about “Shijung” from the “Cultural Anthropology,” point it out that Wen brings the method of studying “Shijung” into the new area, and enthrones his contribution. But in another aspect, there are many scholars criticizing Wen that ignores the traditional scholium to change words and pronunciations at random.
This essay is in order to discuss the motives of Wen’s studying of “Shijung” and the drawbacks of Wen’s scholium. The feature of this essay is important that it points out Wen’s drawbacks in every theme. Although these drawbacks are sometimes the same in one or another Wen’s theme, it can appear Wen’s fault in which one aspect and also make reader a fine conception, not giving readers a vague one. In other words, it is that “note only the overall picture but not the details.”
First, all the papers are introduced. Second, this essay discusses the life and background of Wen, and explains the circumstantial reason why Wen study “Shijung.” The third chapter, it discusses that direct reason why Wen study “Shijung.” His letters and papers can help us understand the reason why he uses the sex idea to explain “Shijung”. The forth chapter discusses some problems about culture and scholium. The problems about culture includes the concept about rainbow in “Shijung”, goddess, the sexual desire, ancient tillage culture, the origin of “Ji.”And then,Wen’s scholium, and grammar (reiterative locution and the word class) are disscussed. In the scholium, Wen have the abusing ancient words, ignoring the meaning of poetry, asyntactic analysis, change words and pronunciation, misinterpretation, and explaining the meaning of the words according to the same words in “Shijung.”Wen follows traditional Syntax to decipher Shijung and classes these words. From Qin dynasty until the Republic Era, Wen’ study transcends the ancients’ viewpoints, but unavoidably Wen still mistakes. Sometimes we understand the meaning of one word according to two or three sentences together. But Wen separates from them so that he misunderstands the meaning of the word. Therefore, Wen has the “misunderstanding the part of speech,” “mis-analyzing the structure of sentence,” “misunderstanding the meaning of the word,” and “changing words and pronunciations at random.” At reiterative locution, it explains the meaning of reiterative locution and explores the knowledge of Wen Yi-Duo’s reiterative locution with normal and extraordinary locution, second, it points out the fault of Wen’s explanation. In normal locution, Wen’s faults are using one vocabulary to explain reiterative locution, abusing sound to explain reiterative locution, and misunderstanding that different reiterative locution are the same. In extraordinary locution, Wen’s faults are using one vocabulary to explain reiterative locution, and although the meaning is correct, he still considers reiterative locution as two vocabularies. Wen has no paper to explore reiterative locution, but we can understand his knowledge of reiterative locution from all his discussions.
The fifth chapter points out the worth and significance of Wen’s studying in the study History of Shijung. The sixth chapter is conclusion.
Otherwise, there are so many the literary studies of Shijung from the ancient periods until nowadays. Wen’s literary study of Shijung provides another way to read Shijung. Through reader’s image, it can be filling with overall picture in the Shijung. Although it is full of appreciation of the beauty, sometimes it is too over or beautiful to conform the text. This point is indeed concerned on the stand of traditional scholium. There is no denying that Wen not only leads scholars to an uncharted field, and also open the new aspect of literary study.
