Abstract
Taiwan Naive Art was founded in the 1960s, referring to self-taught creators without formal art education. Hung Tung (1920-1987) and Wang Yeh (1934-2016), both of whom are in the naive art vein, share the same "Fantasy" qualities that have shaped the distinctive genre of Taiwan's naive art."Fantasy" by Hung Tung and Wang Yeh originates from an irrational creative process and the incorporation of traditional folklore patterns. These patterns are then transformed into forms that defy common sense, resulting in a surreal and grotesque expression. While Taiwan's naive art typically focuses on external reality and faithfully depicts daily life, the art of these two artists tends to delve into internal and spiritual imagery. This style is evidently distinct from the majority of Taiwan's naive art. Hung Tung and Wang Yeh share similarities in terms of biographical experiences, creative motivations, forms of expression, and subject matter. These similarities provide a basis for a collaborative study of the two artists.
Starting from naive art, the first chapter of this paper explores the concept and history of naive art in Taiwan, while also discussing the specific roles of Hung Tung and Wang Yeh within this artistic genre. The second chapter delves into the biographical and creative trajectories of the two artists to understand the influence of their growth process on their creations. The third chapter explores the characteristics of the formal expressions of the works through the analysis of the paintings. The fourth chapter delves deeper into the subject matter of the paintings, gradually uncovering the personal metaphors beneath the surfaces. The fifth chapter showcases specific works to illuminate more artistic characteristics and to re-examine the definition and positioning of "Naive Art." Through a comprehensive study of the art of Hung Tung and Wang Yeh, this research explores the unique aspects of Taiwan's naive art and reflects on its value in Taiwan's art.
