Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

“The Books of Odes” is the one of the kind in Chinese history, since it reveals cultures, politics and living styles in ancient Chinese; its plain words and outstanding writing skills make “the Book of Odes” a long lasting masterpiece.
The thesis is an inquiry about the art of female image in “The Books of Odes”. In the first chapter I will briefly introduce the study methods of this thesis, the whole structure of it, and other related studies about female image. The second part concerns the history of “The Book of Odes”; to get a better understanding of “The Book of Odes”, it is necessary to have a rigid research about the background of Chou, including its society, politics, and culture in the period of time.
The third part focuses on the personalities of females in “The Books of Odes”, trying to reveal feminine features by discussing their extrinsic and intrinsic properties. Furthermore, I will then argue the foresight of female image in “The Book of Odes” during chapter four.
In the fifth part I compare the “The Book of Odes” with western feminism. Feminism today turns into a slogan to show the importance of sexual equality; that is, one of the most important properties of feminism is the equal treatment between men and women, and this can also be founded in “The Book of Odes”. What is in common is that they both emphasize the spirit of autonomy.
For ancient females, their social statues are quite low; the treatment of women is inferior especially in Chou, so it is surprising that the characters in “The Book of Odes” not only have Chinese female virtues, but also have epochal western attitudes. In my opinion, “The Book of Odes” predicts a radical change in female treatment; in the final chapter.
