Abstract

The earliest Chinese travel narratives can be found in a number of poems in Shihjing (the Classics of Poetry), dating from the 10th to 7th Century BC, describing the lives of ancient Chinese who migrated from their homelands to other places. This paper examines the poems in Shihjing to better understand the experiences of ancient Chinese who traveled for various reasons. Some of the travel narratives in Shihjing are simple expressions of personal experiences, while some others mix of reality and fiction. However, all of these works were composed using literary techniques. A study of these narratives can help to understand the embedded meanings of the travel writing that appears in Shihjing.
