Abstract
The short story collections Labyrinth Carpet and Lake Like a Mirror by Malaysian-Chinese author Ho Sok Fong demonstrate how her writing differs from standard Malaysian-Chinese realism in its litheness and unique aesthetic characteristics. These two short story collections are the research subjects of this thesis, which explores the stories according to the social field of their publication, their language styles, and their creative techniques. The three directions undertaken in this study are research of the writing process, analysis of the writing techniques, and reflection on the writer’s consciousness about her stories’ themes. Further, this thesis attempts to clarify the position of Ho Sok Fong and her stories within the context of contemporary Malaysian-Chinese literary history, and thereby establish the meaning and value of research on Ho Sok Fong. Keywords: Ho Sok Fong, Malaysian-Chinese literature, magical realism, Labyrinth Carpet, Lake Like a Mirror
