Abstract

According to the current academic research results, Yan Liben’s Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers of the Tang Dynasty, currently housed in the National Palace Museum, should be a joint tribute by the three countries of Linyi, Poli, and Luocha in 631 AD.
However, in the past research, because of the doubts about the authenticity of this Yan Liben's Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers and the lack of some documents, the narrative is mainly limited to affirming the importance of this painting in historical relics, rather than focusing on Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers itself for research.
This thesis first compares the styles of Yan Liben's Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers by sorting out the source of the creation of the painting and searching whether there are other Tribute Bearers drawn Linyi, Poli, and Loucha.
Secondly, from organizing the life of Yan Liben, looking forward to the influence of dynasty changes on art, in-depth discussion of how art exchanges and develops under the alternation of dynasties from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The end of the second part looks back at why Yan Liben drew the Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers in a random arrangement of teams for those foreign counties who visited and how his painting skills were exceptional.
Third, try to understand how the three counties in Southeast Asia view the tribute to China based on historical data from Linyi, Poli, and Loucha from a shifted perspective.
Fourth, by analyzing Chinese books, cultural unearthed relics in the region, historical materials, and image styles, a detailed analysis of the source of the diplomatic envoys and artifacts in Yan Liben's Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers. Furthermore, interpreting the proportion of realism and imagination of the work based on the above data.
Through analysis, comparison and validation, in addition to clarifying the development context of Yan Liben and the Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers, it also provides an additional source of proof for the corresponding position of the Loucha Kingdom in the study of the three Kingdoms’ tribute. Moreover, having a better understanding of Yan Liben, where the documentary and imagination are applied to the Foreign Envoy with Tribute Bearers. Ultimately, the final integration of dynasty, technique, documentary and imagination, proved the master's skill.
