Abstract

Xu Bing is an international artist who lives in the contemporary art of the East and the West. His artistic creation began duringthe turbulent years of Mainland China, from Beijing to New York, USA. Though Xu Bing grew in different environment, he can achieve great success and sensation in his artistic works. In 1999, Xu Bing was the winner of MacArthur Fellows Program, which is also known as the “Genius Grant”, , making him internationally recognized.
Apart from Xu Bing’s artistic creation, the author will also analyze the development and message brought by Chinese contemporary art after year 1979. From the late 1970s to the 1980s, several Chinese contemporary art movements such as the "Star Art Exhibition" and the "85 New Wave" appeared, and thus a group of influential contemporary artists emerged worldwide, such as Huang Yongping, Gu Wenda, Ai Weiwei, Cai Guoqiang and Xu Bing. , who undoubtedly become one of the most important artists in Mainland China. As mentioned in thehe 1st "Welsh Visual Arts Awards", mentioning , "Xu Bing is an artist who can transcend cultural boundaries, convert Eastern and Western cultures, and express his thoughts and real problems in visual language." The above review also reaffirms Xu Bing’s value and prospect as he claims to focus on breakthrough thinking as his main creative direction. However, Xu Bing’s artistic creations still consists connotations such as "Zen thought", "metaphor", "criticism" and the artist's "forbearance". While revealing the artist's character of criticalness in his artistic piece, it also reveals how the external collocation works on the possibility of his final interpretation.
This dissertation will start with combining the literature references toto describe Xu Bing himself and his artistic creation, sorting out the relationship with contemporary Chinese art, and demonstrating the importance of Xu Bing through examples; then, it will compare Xu Bing's artistic creation with corresponding background. Chapter 2 will further analyze the characteristics derived from the above in depth, and explore the three aspects of Zen thought, metaphor and criticism, and the state of mind in artistic creation. This is the three important parts of Xu Bing’s artistic creation that give inspiration to the development of contemporary art. Finally, it discusses and analyzes Xu Bing’s connection and context to contemporary Chinese art, and draws conclusions on Xu Bing’s artistic creation and the messages brought by the Chinese contemporary art, which are the importance of "forbearance", "metaphor", "criticism" and "unexplainable tacit understanding" in artistic creation , and media use and arrangement by Xu Bing.
