A Research in Difficulty and Solution of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Succession --A Case Study of EMBA Students in A University

Abstract

The first founder of companies eventually should have handed over to the next successor after retired inherit or passed away And the successor has to face the life cycle of the family business when it comes especially family firms The culture of business in Asian is different with European and American Companies in Europe and America usually are performance-oriented That is corporate interests are the biggest consideration However companies in Chinese areas are deeply affected by the Chinese culture which emphasizes ethics and family inherit Under family benefits greater than interests of business in mindset handing over business to their family members can always be considered the first choice The successor can be children or husband or wife How small and medium-sized enterprises in Taiwan plan their succession and what problems successors meet are the main questions to be discovered and discussed in this research Therefore this research is to interview 10 family enterprises in Taiwan In interview they talked about how an enterprise founder planed succession helping the next successor take over business and he would easily meet succession difficulties and problems during succession process These information of interview shows that the first founders of small and medium-sized firms in Taiwan normally have succession planning but unfortunately those successors in the company who compare to other siblings are not really capable to run business even though the successors are their children Successors in the succession process often encounter some difficulties and challenges but the main factors that the second-generation or third-generation wants take over business are characteristics of small and medium-sized firms because succession or inheritance is still a continuation of the family-run mission
