There were 54 modern sugar factories constructed in Taiwan during the Japanese period And there are 8 main spaces in a modern sugar factory which are milling room/boiler room/clarifying room/pump room/crystalizing room/centrifuging room/drying room/packing room These 54 sugar factories can be categorized into 7 types of spatial patterns based on the 8 main spaces that is the motivation of this study There are three topics in this study First start from the history of the global sugar industry trying to figure out how the traditional sugar cane industry district were established by colonization during the Age of Discovery before19th century and then traditional sugar cane industry were modernized because of the Industrial Revolution and the competition of the sugar beet industry Some countries in western Europe such as Britain France German and some parts of the United States like California Hawaii became the centers of sugar industry which manufactured sugar machinery and design the building of sugar factory Second divide the development of modernization of sugar cane industry of Taiwan during Japanese Periods into three sections Section one (1900-1908)is about the early(1880-1895)experience of sugar beet industry in Hokkaido influenced the initial step of modernization of sugar cane industry of Taiwan Section two(1906-1920)is about the European and American engineering firms and iron works which manufactured whole sugar factory were introduced to Taiwan through the Japanese sugar companies Section three(1913-1945) is about the Japanese and Taiwanese local engineering firms and iron works learned experience from the section two then been able to manufacturing whole sugar factory by their own Third categorize 54 sugar factories which constructed in Taiwan during the Japanese period into 7 types of spatial patterns Not only analyzing the architecture forms but also studying the connections and relevances between construction date engineering firms and Japanese sugar companies Following is the content in detail: Chapter I Introuduction: 1 1 Motivation and purpose of the research 1 2 Definition and methods 1 3 Range of the research 1 4 Literature review Chapter II Development and Dissemination of Modern Sugar Industry: This chapter is about figuring out the development of global sugar industry before and after Industrial Revolution and the overseas spread because of colonization 2 1 Early sugar industry 2 2 Beet sugar industry 2 2 1 Development of beet sugar industry in Europe 2 2 2 Development of beet sugar industry in America 2 2 3 Sugar beet processing 2 3 Overseas colonization impact cane sugar industrialization 2 3 1 Industrialization of cane sugar industry in the Caribbean 2 3 2 Industrialization of cane sugar industry in Hawaii 2 3 3 Industrialization of cane Sugar industry in other colonies 2 3 4 Sugarcane processing 2 4 The beginning of the industrialization of sugar industry in eastern Asia 2 5 Summary Chapter III Evolution of Sugar Industry in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period The evolution of Sugar Industry in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period is divided into three sections in this chapter 3 1 Section of self-study and assembling 1900-1908 3 1 1 Early cane Sugar industry and sugar mill in Taiwan 3 1 2 Founding of the Taiwan Seito sugar company 3 1 3 Provisional Taiwan Bureau of Sugar Affairs and small-scale sugar factories 3 1 4 Construction and location of sugar factories in the section of self-study and assembling 3 2 Section of western technology importing1906—1920 3 2 1 Procurement of various Japanese sugar companies in western Europe in the 1900s 3 2 2 Expedition of the Taiwan Seito sugar company in Hawaii in 1906 3 2 3 Engineering firms and iron works of western Europe and the United States in Taiwan 3 2 4 Construction and location of sugar factories in the section of western technology importing 3 3 Section of self-made and outputting1913-1945 3 3 1 New construction and expansion of sugar factories 3 3 2 Engineering firms and iron works in Japan and Taiwan 3 3 3 Construction technological transfer before World War II 3 3 4 Construction and location of sugar factories in section of self-made and outputting 3 4 Summary Chapter IV Spatial Transformation of Sugar Factories This chapter is about analyzing the spatial patterns and the transformation about the sugar factories in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period in various aspects 4 1 Spaces of sugar factories in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period 4 1 1 Interior spaces of a cane sugar factory 4 1 2 Classification of spatial patterns:Pattern A/B/C 4 2 Spatial patterns of sugar factories in the different sections of evolution of sugar industry 4 2 1 Spatial patterns in the section of self-study and assembling 4 2 2 Spatial patterns in the section of western technology importing 4 2 3 Spatial patterns in the section of self-made and outputting 4 3 Influences of different patterns on sugar production 4 3 1 Different piping configurations of cane juice and syrup in different spatial patterns 4 3 2 Different piping configurations of Steam and condensate in different spatial patterns 4 3 3 Different management sight in different spatial patterns 4 4 Correspondences between different spatial patterns and the development of The global sugar industry 4 4 1 Associations between differents countries sugar companies engineering firms and spatial patterns 4 4 2 The symbol of the transformation and the continuation of spatial pattern C 4 5 Summary Chapter V Conclusion 5 1 Review the spatial transformation of sugar factories during the Japanese colonial period from the development of global sugar industry 5 2 Recommendations for future research References
