A Study on the Urban Greens Planning and Tainan Park in Japanese Colonial Period

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the urban greens and the Tainan Park planning in Tainan city during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) By the documentary source books about urban planning the first purpose of this study is to analyze the expanding process of urban greens By the historical materials about Tainan Park the second purpose is to clarify the original space of Tainan Park As mentioned above this thesis divides the urban greens planning of Tainan city into four periods: (1) Paving roundabouts and planning for the North and South Parks (2) Planning for Tainan Park (3) Expanding the urban greens and planning for the neighborhood parks (4) Establishing the urban green spaces system It is found that the factors such as the decision of the government or the difficulty of land acquisition will decide whether the construction of park or not Finally in the discussion of Tainan Park planning This thesis found that Tainan Park planned leisure education sports and other facilities with Western and Japanese styles This phenomenon is common in urban parks in Taiwan at the same time due to the policy and social needs However the locality of Tainan Park planning can be seen by the site selection and the planning of the historical context
