An Analysis of Values and Choice of Living Arrangements When Aged

Abstract

Taiwan has currently at the stage of an aged society and it has made the issue of types of living arrangements for the elderly become increasingly important In addition to age gender education level marital status children's presence self-care ability etc values could further affect the willingness of choosing institutional care community-based care or informal care at home This paper aims at exploring individual’s different decisions of living arrangements when aged under the influence of Confucian traditional filial piety culture value and other controlling variables such as demographic and socioeconomic factors Results can be used as a reference for government to formulate policies related to the long-term care living environment Individuals' thoughts regarding the choices of their own living arrangements allow them to plan the ideal living arrangements early and serve as a reference for the future direction of the government society and private enterprises to reach for wellbeing of individuals This study finds that apart from the influences of controlling variables values are also significant factors that affect the individuals’ decision of living arrangements when aged When individuals are getting old and need to be taken care of they still prefer home-based informal care and community-based care This part is in line with the government's goal of "aging in place " in implementing the Long-Term Care 2 0 policy Findings suggest that the government could consider to allocate more resources of long-term care to this section in order to meet the expectations of various needs of individuals when formulating policies in the future
