Abstract

Using a tablet reading system to read e-books will be the mainstream in the future This study was intended to explore how to enhance digital reading experience and acceptance concerning both shallow reading and in-depth reading To enhance user experience (UX) of shallow reading the context of use and behavior patterns of tablet reading systems were thoroughly investigated with an interactive interface designed First contextual inquiry was conducted to extract the context of use and behavior patterns Then with potential needs identified design solutions were presented Finally based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) an empirical approach was employed to verify the hypothesis As shown by the test results the improved version of the interactive interface scores significantly higher (p<05) than the original version in terms of perceived usefulness (PU) perceived ease of use (PEOU) attitude (ATUT) and behavioral intention (BI) As for in-depth reading the focus group interview was first performed to extract users’ twenty-one wants and needs (W&N) for functions of the interactive interface Then the relationship between an individual function and the level of reading satisfaction was analyzed; meanwhile those W&N functions were arranged in order of importance with the benchmark for evaluation established After the top ten W&N functions were determined a prototype was designed Last based on the TAM the hypothesis was verified through an empirical approach As shown by the test results the average scores got by the improved version of the interactive interface are significantly higher (p< 05) than those got by the original version in terms of PU PEOU ATUT and BI The findings in this study indicate that with user experience taken as the core design of the interactive interface both shallow reading and in-depth reading are effectively enhanced in terms of perceived usefulness which includes reading experience and acceptance Moreover attitude is significantly upgraded which leads behavioral intention to be effectively improved
